You're reading: Donetsk airport loses strategic value, Ukrainian troops move 1.5 kilometers away

The Donetsk airport has lost importance as a military asset, says Viktor Muzhenko, the Ukrainian Armed Forces Chief of the General Staff.

“The administrative zone proper of the Donetsk airport is of no value. Because as a result of intense hostilities it has been completely destroyed, thus stopping the Ukrainian troops from defending it further,” he told foreign military attaches in Kyiv on Jan. 29.

“We were forced to move them away to other fronts, literally 1.5 kilometers beyond the runway. The runway, too, has become unusable as a result of hostilities,” Muzhenko said.

This is why “the airport has lost its value as a military asset,” he said.
