You're reading: Donetsk People’s Republic appoints new defense minister to replace Strelkov

Moscow – The supreme council of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) on Aug. 15 confirmed Volodymyr Kononov as the DPR defense minister, Donbas militants' leader and supreme council member Myroslav Rudenko told Interfax.

“Volodymyr Kononov has been confirmed by the Supreme Council as the Defense Minister of the DPR,” Rudenko said.

Last night DPR Security Council member Serhiy Kavtaradze told Interfax that the DPR leaders had appointed Kononov as the acting defense minister to replace Igor Girkin (Strelkov) who had tendered his resignation.

Kononov is “a well-known militants and the commander of one of our detachments,” Kavtaradze said.
