You're reading: Donetsk regional council demands Kyiv remove troops from Donbas

Deputies of the Donetsk regional council have demanded the Kyiv authorities stop forceful actions and remove armed formations from the region.

“If the current authorities are interested in preserving Ukraine,
they are obliged to move resistance back to a political level. The
authorities at Pechersky Hills in Kyiv should not just hear but comply
with the demands posed by an emergency meeting of all-level deputies of
the Donetsk region,” Donetsk deputies said in a statement passed at the
regional council meeting on Thursday.

“We also demand the authorities stop immediately any forceful actions
regarding Donbas, return the Ukrainian Armed Forces to their bases and
ban sending any illegal armed formations to the Donetsk regions,” the
document said.

Deputies said they supported the actions of people’s deputies of the
Party of Regions and the Communist Party in Verkhovna Rada, “who defend
the interests of eastern Ukraine and the rights of our voters to live
decently, not upon Kyiv’s order.”

“We support the right of regions for independent humanitarian policy
(our sacred rights what holidays to celebrate, what heroes to admire, to
which church to go and how to bring up the younger generation). We
support passing as quickly as possible the bill on local referendums –
all vital issues of the regions, cities, districts, villages and
settlements should be resolved via declarations of the people’s will,”
the Donetsk region council deputies said.
