You're reading: Ecology minister: Creation of biosphere international reserve in Chornobyl zone still possible

Ecology and Natural Resources Minister of Ukraine Oleh Proskuriakov has reported that his ministry will do everything possible to rehabilitate Chornobyl exclusion zone and ensure there is environmental safety there. 

“The idea of the creation of a biosphere international reserve in the Chornobyl area is in demand as one of the ways of achieving the rehabilitation of these polluted territories, and their further development,” the ministry’s press service quotes Proskuriakov as saying.

“The ministry sees its task, first of all, in restoring environmental safety to the exclusion zone. The Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry and State Agency on the Exclusion Zone Management monitor the radiation background, water and air quality, implement projects to monitor environmental safety at Chornobyl NPP connected with toxic waste, and the building of the new secure containment over the Shelter facility,” the minister said.
