You're reading: 18 troops killed during unilateral ceasefire in eastern Ukraine – Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said Ukrainian troops are still being killed by members of illegal armed groups in eastern Ukraine despite the unilateral ceasefire declared by the Ukrainian administration.

“A total of 174 of our troops are now held hostage, almost 150 have been killed, and over 300 have been wounded. Eighteen troops were killed and 27 were wounded in less than a week since the ceasefire was declared. A ten-month-old baby was killed in a grenade attack the day before yesterday,” Poroshenko said at the PACE session in Strasbourg on June 26.

Poroshenko said Ukraine wants peace and for that reason he has presented his peace plan, which envisions a halt to the violence, amnesty for people who have not committed grave crimes, and stabilization of the situation in the region.

“We should ensure that the internal processes become civilized again. We will do it. We will restore not only peace, but also confidence,” Poroshenko said.

According to earlier reports, the Ukrainian president on June 20 declared a unilateral ceasefire by Ukraine until 1000 on June 27.
