European Parliament President Martin Schulz believes that one can no longer expect continuation of the European integration policies from Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

“The opposition in Ukraine is expecting from EU exactly what I said in the Council – the door should be open,” Schulz said at a press conference, which was held as part of the EU Council session in Brussels on Thursday.

He also ruled out the possibility of stopping the dialog with the Ukrainian government. “Not to speak to the government what does it mean? To give finally up the idea of drawing Ukraine in the direction of the EU. But this is exactly what the opposition on Maidan place expect, the orientation on Europe. We can’t expect this from Mr. Yanukovych,” the European Parliament’s president said.

At the same time, Schulz said that if the EU did not continue to send a signal of the open door this would disappoint the people who rose against Yanukovych.
