You're reading: Estonian nationalists seek closure of Russian-language newspaper over Ukraine

Members of the Estonian opposition nationalist party, Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica (IRL), have proposed to the Tallinn city assembly that the Russian-language local newspaper, Stolitsa, should be closed for its support of Russia on Ukraine.

“The taxpayer-funded newspaper must meet the interests of citizens, and it is completely unacceptable that city money is being used for more pro-Kremlin propaganda,” IRL assembly member Tarmo Kruusimae told the Postimees newspaper.

The lawmaker was outraged by “claims made by the Stolitsa editor-in-chief who said that Crimea’s incorporation into Russia is consistent with Russia’s national interests and that Europe has no right to poke its nose into what is happening in Ukraine.”
