Tallinn – Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves has said that the situation in Ukraine is serious and it is necessary to provide military assistance to the country.

At the public debate with First Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans in Tallinn University on Feb. 3, he said that Ukraine should get military assistance.

“The situation in Ukraine is very serious and I hope that most people will understand. If we do not help Ukraine, Russia will win this war,” the head of state said.

“I am worried that no one openly admits the presence of the Russian army there,” the head of state said.

According to him, “we need a Europe that guarantees the protection of human rights, stands for the rule of law and is based on the values which do not put economic benefits above all.”

“The EU must maintain unity and confidence in curbing the aggressor and his supporters. If we allow Russia to determine the borders in Europe, they will win,” Ilves said.

Timmermans also spoke for the continuation of anti-Russian sanctions and said that Russia should adhere to the Minsk agreements.
