You're reading: EU alarmed at Russia’s pressure on neighbors

Vilnius - The foreign ministers of the European Union states who met on Saturday, Sept.7 have warned Russia that the country should not press on neighbors which are trying to have tighter relations with the West.

After a meeting with Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs & Security Policy, the EU ministers said that Eastern Partnership countries face a large pressure.

If to speak about our relations with neighbors in the east we want that they select their economic and political relations themselves, Ashton told reporters.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius said that the pressure of Russia on Ukraine and other eastern partners will strengthen, and it is important that the issue remains on the agenda of the EU work.

Six states participate in the EU’s Eastern Partnership programme: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
