You're reading: EU ambassador notes misuse of EU funds on strengthening Ukraine’s border

The Ukrainian authorities have ineffectively spent tens of millions of euros that were earlier allocated by the European Union to strengthen Ukraine's state border, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Tombinski has said.

“As for the border with Russia, we, as the EU, provided tens of
millions of euros to help Ukrainian border guards. What we get now –
Ukrainian border guards ask for money to buy everything. And what
happened to the money that was given by the EU?” he said at the 4th
national expert forum” From Revolution to a new country” in Kyiv on
Tuesday.

He said that in this regard, Ukraine has to deal with corruption and
introduce transparency in the process,” because earlier these funds
were used ineffectively.”

Tombinski said that European leaders note Russia’s unlawful actions with respect to Ukraine.

“This obliges Western countries, the EU to reconsider relations with
Russia. We will have new tools of influence on relations with Russia,”
he said.

He also said that the EU had drawn conclusions from the current
crisis between Ukraine and Russia and would thus return to the issue of
the creation of European armed forces.

“We think that we will develop military cooperation between EU countries,” Tombinski said.
