You're reading: EU not recognizing ‘elections’ held in Crimea

The European Union does not recognize the legitimacy of the so-called elections held in Crimea, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has said.

“In view of reports about local ‘elections’ having taken place in Crimea and Sevastopol, we recall that the European Union recognizes neither the legal framework nor the legitimacy of these ‘elections,'” the EU foreign policy chief said in a statement released in Brussels on Sept. 15.

She also said that the EU “continues to condemn the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and will not recognize it.”

In addition, the German authorities also do not intend to recognize the results of parliamentary elections in Crimea, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

“Russia’s annexation of Crimea contradicts international law. Therefore, Germany does not recognize the elections to the State Council of Crimea,” he said at a briefing in Berlin on Sept. 15.
