The European Union regrets Russia's vetoing the UN Security Council resolution on the establishment of the international tribunal to try those responsible for the downing of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in Ukraine's east on July 17, 2014.

“We very much regret that the UN Security Council last night did not adopt due to the veto by Russia the resolution on the downing of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. This resolution would as you know have established a binding and credible mechanism for prosecuting those responsible for this terrible tragedy and at the same time it would have also honored the commitment made by the UN Security itself in the resolution 2166 to hold the perpetrators to account,” a spokeswoman for EU diplomacy chief Federica Mogherini, Maja Kocijancic, said at a briefing in Brussels on July 30.

“The countries that are working together in the joint investigation team have said that the establishment of this UN tribunal to try the perpetrators was the preferred option because it would have generated a broad international support of the prosecution process,” Kocijancic said.

However, regardless of this setback, the work should continue, so that everyone directly or indirectly responsible for the tragedy should be held accountable, she added.
