The European Union can see no reason for the conflict in eastern Ukraine to prevent any of the parties to the current natural gas agreements from complying with them, an EU diplomatic source told Interfax on Aug. 28.

The source, who was speaking ahead of a planned meeting in Moscow between European Commissioner for Energy Guenther Oettinger and Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, said the meeting would mean the resumption of talks begun in Brussels about six weeks ago and continued in Minsk.

Oettinger is due in Moscow on Friday, Aug. 29. His spokeswoman Marlene Holzner had said earlier that during his visit, he would unveil new proposals for a compromise gas deal with Ukraine in preparation for the next round of trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the EU.
