You're reading: EU urges Russia to free Savchenko on humanitarian grounds

Brussels - The rejection by a Moscow Court of Ukrainian military pilot Nadia Savchenko's appeal against her pre-trial detention will entail serious consequences, as she has now spent 75 days on hunger strike to protest her illegal kidnapping in Ukraine and her transfer to Russia, the European External Action Service said in a statement issued on Feb. 26.

“Russia bears responsibility for her very fragile health,” the statement reads.

“The EU calls on the Russian authorities to urgently release Ms Savchenko on humanitarian grounds,” the European External Action Service said.

According to the service, this would be in line with the recently agreed “Package of measures for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements” and the commitment to release all hostages detained as a result of the conflict in Donbas.
