You're reading: EU welcomes Moscow’s intention to revoke permission for use of troops in Ukraine

The European Union has constantly urged Russia to cancel the decision of the Federation Council that permits the use of force in Ukraine, and now welcomes the steps taken by Russian President Vladimir Putin in this direction.

Spokesperson for EU High Representative for the
Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, Maja Kocijancic,
told Interfax-Ukraine that the EU welcomes President Putin’s steps in
this direction, and hopes that this will be done without delay.

She also noted that the EU had called on Russia to support the
implementation of the peace plan presented by Ukrainian President Peter
Poroshenko and take effective measures to stop the flow of fighters and
weapons across the Ukrainian border.

This would greatly contribute to the de-escalation of the situation
and would pave the way for a solution of the current crisis by political
means, Kocijancic said.

As reported, on June 24, Putin asked the Russian Federation Council
to revoke the decree dated March 1 that permits the use of the Russian
army on the territory of Ukraine. The Federation Council at its June 25
sitting is to back this decision.
