You're reading: EuroMaidan takes its protests to London

EuroMaidan is taking its protests to the homes of Ukrainian oligarchs in London -- starting with a planned actions against the nation's richest billionaire, Rinat Akhmetov, who is a strong political and financial backer of President Viktor Yanukovych. A protest is set for Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. outside of Akhmetov's luxury flat at 1 Hyde Park.

The protesters should have rich targets since Ukraine’s wealthy elite favor residencies abroad, particularly in London.

The EuroMaidan’s press service reports that the first AutoMaidan took place in London on Jan. 18. The car caravans — 20 cars and 60 participants — were designed to “raise awareness about how Ukraine and the free spirit of its nation are being squashed by the octopus that is the current regime of (President Viktor) Yanukovych. The protesters honked their car horms from Holland Park Avenue near Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov’s flat (at One Hyde Park) and also to the Russian Embassy back to the Ukrainian Center in London.

Billionaire Rinat Akhmetov shows irritation wtih protesters showing up outside his Donetsk home on Dec. 31. Akhmetov is a top target of the EuroMaidan anti-government demonstrations for his financial support of President Viktor Yanukovych.

It’s not clear what the effect will be, but when EuroMaidan protesters in Donetsk did the same outside Akhmetov’s house there on Dec. 31, he stopped his Mercedes, got out and confronted protesters.
