You're reading: European Parliament doesn’t recognize illegitimate elections in parts of Ukraine’s east

Chairman of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Ukraine and leader of European People's Party Group, Andrej Plenkovic, has called the elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics as illegitimate and illegal ones.

According to him, these elections “were organised contrary to the Ukrainian law”.

“They do not constitute any basis for the free expression of the will of Ukrainian citizens and as such will be recognised neither by the European Parliament nor the international community,” says a communiqué from the EPP received on Nov. 3 evening.

Plenkovic said that “the attempts by Moscow to legitimise these illegally-organised elections are against the Minsk Agreement and could undermine the efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict and the reintegration of these areas into the legal and constitutional order of Ukraine.”

The leader of the largest political group in the European Parliament said that the only elections valid in Ukraine are those carried out under the Constitution and electoral law adopted by the legitimate Ukrainian authorities, such as the early parliamentary elections held on Oct. 26, 2014.

The EPP Group said that during the parliamentary elections on Oct. 26 the Ukrainian people “voted not only for Europe and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but also for democracy, reforms and the unity of the country,” reads a communiqué.
