The European Union needs to play a key role in ensuring the full and effective control of Ukraine's borders, Chair of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok has said.

“We need to play a key role in ensuring the full and effective control of Ukraine’s borders, without which the current crisis cannot be settled,” he said after a meeting of the Committee’s Enlarged Bureau with Commissioner Georgieva and the EEAS’s Executive Secretary General Pierre Vimont.

“We must keep all the options open with Russia, including the further strengthening of sanctions, while being open to dialogue. The EU has a central role to play in facilitating contacts between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders, with the aim of ensuring peace and stability in both countries,” he said.

“We need a new, comprehensive policy towards Russia, taking into account its actions over the last months,” Brok added.

A full meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs will discuss the situation in neighboring countries, including Ukraine on Sept. 2.
