The General Prosecutor's Office jointly with the Security Service of Ukraine detained former head of the Regions Party parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov on February 14, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office said.

"A special operation was conducted on Feb. 14 to detain former head of the Regions Party faction in the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Yefremov, who is suspected of criminal offenses under Part 2 of Article 364 and Part 2 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which are abuse of power under aggravating circumstances and forgery, " newly appointed Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin said.

Prosecutors had been investigating Yefremov’s involvement, along with the alleged involvement of member of parliament Natalia Korolevska of the Opposition Bloc, in funding separatism.

“We have registered the criminal proceeding about four days ago indeed, and the investigation is being conducted due to MP Iryna Heraschenko’s address to media… The investigation is being conducted. For now, I can’t say how much evidence has been gathered. All the facts of the criminal proceeding are being examined,” ex-Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema said at a briefing on Jan. 16.

Yefremov led the former ruling party’s faction in parliament, aligned with ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Ukraine on Feb. 22 during the EuroMaidan Revolution.
