Experts from the Council of Europe over the last five years have no concerns concerning guarantees of rights and freedoms in Ukraine, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine Borys Humeniuk has said.

“As to guarantees of the rights and freedoms of citizens in Ukraine… in the last five years the experts from the Council of Europe who monitor Ukraine have expressed practically no concerns regarding the important [process of the] formation of a civil society in Ukraine,” he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.

According to Humeniuk, the Council of Europe acknowledges that Ukraine is one of the democratic states in Europe that have securing human rights as a national policy, as well as securing the rights of national minorities.

The Director of the Diplomatic Academy noted that a forum entitled “For the Future of Democracy” will be held in Kyiv on Wednesday, October 21. He said that in connection with this, a special session of the Council of Europe will be held and newly elected secretary general of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland will attend.

“Thus, the Council of Europe will be represented at the highest level,” Humeniuk said.

He also said that such forums are held in various countries and, as a rule, they are directed at certain specific political situations.

“In our country currently this specific is well known – the preparations for the elections,” he said.
