You're reading: Explosion in residential building in Kharkiv causes damage worth Hr 18 million

The total damage from an explosion at a residential building at Slynko Street in Kharkiv was Hr 18.12 million, Kharkiv Deputy Mayor Andriy Paramonov said at a sitting of the regional commission for human-caused and environmental emergencies.

“This sum includes not just damage caused to the building by the
explosion, but also expenses on providing food, accommodation, and
medical aid to its residents,” he said.

The members of the commission decided to confer a regional status to
the emergency situation that occurred because of the explosion at the
building, and appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers to allocate money to
tackle the problem.

“We’re taking a decision to confer a regional status to the emergency
situation happened at 2B Slynko Street and ask the Cabinet of Ministers
for material support to respond to the consequences of the emergency.
On the basis of this decision today, all of the necessary materials will
be prepared in order hand them to Premier Mykola Azarov tomorrow,” said
the first deputy head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration,
Valentyn Dulub.

As reported, in the morning on September 4 a flat on the third floor
of a nine-floor building at 2B, Slynko Street in Kharkiv exploded, and
as a result facing walls between the first and fourth floors of the
building collapsed, while corner load bearing walls shifted from their
foundation by 40-50 centimeters from the first to sixth floors.

The building’s residents were evacuated and accommodated in hotels
and in the official premises of Kharkivmisklift municipal enterprise.

The building is to be repaired and completely redesigned. The
building is expected to be repaired by December 20. Kharkiv Mayor
Hennadiy Kernes promised that until this time, the people affected would
not have to pay for housing services.

The investigatory department of Kharkiv region opened a criminal case
on the explosion under paragraph 2, article 367 of the Criminal Code
(official negligence that led to serious consequences).
