FEMEN women's movement members tried to protest near a stage where the official ceremony on the opening of Day of Europe was taking place.

An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported that during a speech of Head of Kyiv city administration Oleksandr Popov two topless girls came closer to the stage and claimed to stop the circusy ceremony.

The police politely took the movement members from under the stage and official guests continued their speeches.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko, Head of Kyiv city administration Oleksandr Popov, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira, and ambassadors of some European countries to Ukraine took part in the ceremony.

"We’re celebrating Day of Europe for the ninth year running. On that day we see how beautiful Kyiv is and how gorgeous Ukraine is," Hryschenko said.

He added that the need of Ukraine’s approach to the European Union is mutual.

Teixeira expressed hope that Day of Europe in Kyiv will be celebrated every year, which will serve to the approach between Ukraine and the EU.

Popov said that Kyiv is eager to become one of the leading capitals of Europe.
