On March 8, the International Women's Day, a march for women's rights was held in Kyiv.

More than a hundred women and men of the rally marched from Sofia Square to the Kyiv City State Administration chanting “Traditions are not a given! Our answer is solidarity,” “Traditions impose violence and sexism! Let enlightenment and emancipation live!”

The participants demanded to abandon the traditional, stereotypical role of women in society and get rid of gender stereotypes.

“Lately we have been hearing about how important it is for our society to revive “traditional Ukrainian values”. But what kind of values that is and why are they to be revived?” activists said in their press release. The are disturbed by the recent initiatives by the lawmakers including abortions ban and the law banning “propaganda of homosexuality”.

Activists urge to not cover sexism, discrimination and women’s rights abuses as “reviving of traditional values”.

Participants also chanted slogans “Freedom! Equality! Global Solidarity!” and carried banners containing a demand to release the convicted members of the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot.
