You're reading: Fighting under way near Luhansk airport

Clashes between Ukrainian government forces and illegal armed groups are taking place on July 9 evening near the Luhansk airport controlled by the Ukrainian army.

Eyewitnesses told Interfax-Ukraine they saw Grad rocket launchers being used twice but could not say by which side.

Eyewitnesses also said that a gas pipeline near the airport has been damaged and the airport’s engineering premises were burning.

An air raid siren was sounded across the city.

About 20 minutes ago two fighter aircraft were seen flying over Luhansk towards the airport. They came under a fire attack but flew away unscathed.

At the same time, users on social networking sites said the attack on the airport has continued throughout Wednesday. They said the attack was carried this afternoon by two tanks and mortar launchers, and Grad launchers were spotted later.
