The State Environmental Inspectorate of the Azov Sea of Ukraine has temporarily banned fishing in the Azov Sea in connection with the outbreak of cholera in Mariupol (Donetsk region).

A statement posted on the Web site of the Ukrainian Environment and Natural Resources Ministry notes that the inspectorate ordered all fishing enterprises and research institutes in the region to suspend fishing in the gulfs of Taganrog and Belosaray.

Failure to comply with the order foresees fines set under Ukrainian law, according to the statement.

The resumption of fishing will be announced later, after the epidemiological situation improves in this area.

Four residents of Mariupol have been diagnosed with cholera.

The disease was caused by the consumption of marine fish and the ingestion of seawater.
