You're reading: Luxembourg foreign minister: EU could help Ukraine solely on certain conditions

Brussels, February 11 - The European Union could allocate funds to help Ukraine, only knowing for sure for whom these funds are meant and why they are sent there, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn said at a briefing in Brussels on Feb. 10.

It would be unclear for any EU citizen, if billions are allocated now and it is unknown what will be done with these funds, Asselborn said when answering reporters’ questions following the European Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

The International Monetary Fund is also ready to allocate funds solely for carrying out reforms, Asselborn said.

It is currently unclear with whom to deal in Ukraine, when the Ukrainian prime minister has resigned and the president is not trusted, Asselborn said.

The Ukrainian economy is at a very difficult stage and this could turn into an additional catastrophe along with infringing basic rights in the country, the population of which exceeds 40 million people, Asselborn said. But it is clear that the EU wants to find a way out, he said.

If reforms are carried out, if the government recognized by Ukrainians exists and basic rights are respected, the EU will be the first to help Ukraine, Asselborn said.
