The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is working to improve legislation on the adoption of Ukrainian children by foreigners, Acting Director of the Foreign Ministry's Information Policy Department Yevhen Perebyinis has said.

He said at a briefing on Wednesday that the Foreign Ministry had held an interagency meeting on this issue that was attended by representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the Verkhovna Rada, the Social Policy Ministry, the Justice Ministry, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the presidential commissioner for children’s rights.

“The meeting participants noted that the Foreign Ministry in general ensures control over the observance of the rights of Ukrainian children adopted by foreign nationals,” Perebyinis said.

He said that a number of issues remain unresolved, in particular, on the untimely consular registration of adopted children, the untimely provision of reports by adoptive parents, the cases of the re-adoption of children without the consent of the Ukrainian side, as well as the automatic provision of these children with the citizenship of the country of their adopters.

Perebyinis said that the Foreign Ministry had made proposals aimed at improving the legislation in this sphere.
