Soviet architects during Josef Stalin‘s time wanted to build a towering monument of Vladimir Lenin where St. Michael’s Cathedral stands today. The plans called for a gigantic staircase leading downhill to the Dnipro River station.

"Yakiv Shteinberg, suggested a huge Lenin statue on the plot where St. Michael’s Monastery once stood."
No more needs to be said. I hope Yakiv is unpleasantly burning in hell along with the rest of his Jewish Bolshevik bastards.
Ms Svitlana Tuchynska,
Thanks for the Kyiv then and now diversion from the oppressive news of now and later. One advantage of occupation, you can blame some one else. Monumental monuments seam to prevail.
Personally I think the original Famine monument, though understated is a charming icon of Ukrainian values. From the recently erected skyscraper Holodomor Candle to the mythological Motherland durna baba and Madan's statuary Mother Pokrova there is big differences. I always said President Kuchma knew when to stop.
A photo series would be a wonderful addition to the Kyiv Post. Tourist, sightseeing, history and architecture all in one without leaving my chair, until I want to. How many mazhory have no idea the story behind these treasures, much less Kyiv itself. Hope you do more of these quick getaways.

Ukrainians are hospitable, Ukraine is beautiful, Ukrainian is desirable
PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING !
I always enjoy my visits to Kyiv. I am certainly glad some of those hideous monuments were not built. The natural geography of the city is what makes it a nice city, not grandiose buildings.
Kyiv is a beautiful city. Still some of the soviet 6olshevik monstrosities are around : statues and such. I am surprised that they still allow those things Lenin and some of the other statues. They should be replaced with some One of Ukrainian History non red of course!!
If they made those giant statues of those monsters they would have ended up target practice!!
thank God, this garbage was never built in Kyiv, the stalinist architecture truly deserves to where it is today---down the toilet, just like the soviet union. Praise the Lord
