Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has appointed former Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko as the first deputy head of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

The text of a decree to that effect was posted on the official website of the head of state on Friday.

Medvedko, born in 1955, has been working in prosecutor’s offices since 1980.

In 1992-9999, he was a prosecutor in Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region. In 1999-2001, he was chief of a supervisory body in the prosecutor’s office of Donetsk region, while in 2001-2002, he was first deputy chief prosecutor of Luhansk region.

From December 2004 to November 2005, Medvedko was deputy prosecutor general. From November 2005 to November 2010, he served as Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
