You're reading: Freedom House hopes for democratic and fair parliamentary elections in Ukraine

Early parliamentary elections scheduled for Oct. 26 should pass on the entire territory of Ukraine as democratically as the presidential elections, Freedom House President and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor David Kramer has said.

“We believe very firmly in the importance of the upcoming
parliamentary elections and hope that these elections, as the
presidential elections, will be conducted in a free and fair fashion and
will meet the standards of the international community,” he said at a
press conference in Kyiv on Sept. 22.

He also noted that it was very important to ensure that as many Ukrainians as possible could take part in this process.

“Thus, the election will represent all Ukrainians, throughout the
country, including, hopefully, even people living in Crimea,” Kramer
said, adding that it is important to return Crimea under Ukrainian
control.
