You're reading: Fule: Yanukovych’s participation in Eastern Partnership summit to help him discuss problems with EU

European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has called "a good idea" the intention of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to attend the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius on November 28-29, where he will be able to discuss the existing problems with the heads of state and government of the EU countries.

“The president told me on Tuesday that no matter which decision is taken by the Ukrainian side in relation to the Association Agreement [on Thursday the government decided to suspend preparations for the signature of the Association Agreement with the EU], he plans to attend the summit. I think it’s a good idea for him to talk about these problems with the heads of state and government of the EU, as well as with our eastern neighbors, who are following the events in Ukraine,” he said in an interview with reporters in Brussels on Friday.

When asked to comment on possible scenarios in Vilnius, Fule said that “the ball is in the court of the Ukrainians.”

“They need to tell us what they want, and it’s up to the member states to decide what they will do with it,” he said.
