You're reading: Gas talks in Brussels to discuss winter package only; summer package not on agenda

Brussels - The talks on gas that the EU, Russia and Ukraine will hold in Brussels on March 2 will only seek to resolve issues surrounding the winter package of agreements, European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a briefing in Brussels on Feb. 27.

Asked about the possibility that Gazprom would shut off gas supplies to Ukraine before the meeting in Brussels begins, Itkonen said that the European Commission was focused on the seriousness and urgency of the situation, which is why it organized the meeting on March 2. The European Commission is pleased that the Ukrainian and Russian sides accepted the proposal, she said.

She declined to comment on a “unilateral decision” by Gazprom concerning gas supplies to Ukraine.

The European Commission expects that all sides will uphold the winter package of agreements, and that gas flows to the European Union will remain at normal levels, she said.

The winter package is the only item on the agenda, she said, adding that a summer package would not be discussed.
