Ivano-Frankivsk – Limited liability company Geothermal (Ivano-Frankivsk) plans to realize an investment project on the construction of a geothermal facility in Ivano-Frankivsk to obtain alternative sources of energy for housing and utilities.

“No one was interested in the issue until today in Ukraine. In Ivano-Frankivsk there could be the first experimental facility in Ukraine,” Geothermal Director Viktor Shevchuk said at a session f Ivano-Frankivsk city council on September 6, 2012.

He said that on the territory of the city there is a geothermal water layer 3.5 kilometers deep, and its temperature reaches 85-87 centigrade.

Shevchuk said that he studied the operation of such geothermal facilities in Germany.

Two wells are drilled to use thermal water. On well is used to lift hot water and it goes to the heat exchanger and cold water goes back via the second well to the layer. Heat energy and hot water from the heat exchanger will be supplied to the city pipeline.

Shevchuk said that the geothermal facility produces 120,000-200,000 gigacalories of heat per year, which price for Ivano-Frankivskteplokomunenergo will be UAH 110-130 per gigacalory.

It will take up to 18 months to build the facility, and its payback period is eight years.

The cost of the project is EUR 12 million. Shevchuk said that individuals from the Czech Republic are investors in the project.

He said that five such geothermal facilities could fully supply heat to Ivano-Frankivsk residents.

During the discussion of the project, acting director of Ivano-Frankivskteplokomunenergo Ruslan Haida expressed interest in the realization of the project and proposal a land plot near a boiler in Symonenko Street to install the facility.

City councilors instructed Haida to elaborate the possibility of the realization of the project and prepare proposals for the next session of the city council.
