Berlin - A group of 14 officers from the German Bundeswehr are to study a possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to monitor the Russian-Ukrainian border, writes German magazine Der Spiegel, referring to the German Defense Ministry.

According to the document, the use of UAVs is caused by the necessity to maintain ceasefire regime by the conflict parties in Ukraine’s east.

The Defense Ministry said that the mission of the German military men would last from three up to five days. If the German takes a positive decision to use the UAVs, it will send to the Ukrainian region several Luna reconnaissance UAV systems.

As reported, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko and the Chairperson-in-Office for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Didier Burkhalter, have agreed a substantial increase in personnel and equipment for the monitoring and verification mission.

“Petro Poroshenko has given his permission for the use by the OSCE of unmanned aerial vehicles, and Didier Burkhalter promised to deliver them to Ukraine in the very near future,” the Ukrainian president’s press office said on Saturday, Sep. 13.
