You're reading: Government gives a status report on the Chornovol case

More than 50 witnesses have been interrogated and an additional 20 examinations ordered in connection with the Tetyana Chornovol assault case.  

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated through its Rapid Response Committee that it is acting in conjunction with the media under the inter-departmental working group on analyzing compliance with current legislation regarding the freedom of speech and protection of journalists’ rights, the President’s press-service announced.

According to the MIA, the results of the chemical examinations of the paint from both of the cars are completely identical. “We can now be sure that the investigation has acquired the cars that were driven by the victim and those suspects who could be involved in the crime,” said Oleksandr Hnativ, Deputy Head of the Main Investigation Administration of the MIA.

Moreover, the MIA announced that the ministry has extracted all video records from the security cameras that filmed the cars that passed the place of the incident during the beating of Tetiana Chornovol. These records were extracted in the first hours after the incident, and have been reviewed and analyzed.

The Main Investigation Administration of the MIA wrote that a 5th suspect was detained on December 27. According to previous information, he directly took a part in the beating of Tetyana Chornovol. “The investigation is ongoing according to procedures in order to identify the role of every person in this case,” the MIA representatives said.

Tetyana Chornovol, a journalist and civil activist, was attacked on the Boryspil – Kyiv highway in the early morning of December 25. President Viktor Yanukovych has ordered the Minister of the Interior and the Prosecutor General to urgently employ all appropriate measures for the investigation of this crime.

Dariya Chepak, the President’s press secretary, emphasized the importance of a timely and transparent investigation and compliance with Yanukovych’s order to fulfill the demands of civil society.
