Health Ministry: Death toll from flu, respiratory infections in Ukraine rises to 1,019

The number of those who have died of flu and flu-like illnesses in Ukraine has increased to 1,019 people as of January 21, the Ukrainian Health Ministry's press service has reported. Five people have died of flu and its complications (pneumonia) over the past 24 hours, the press service said.

According to the ministry, the epidemic threshold was exceeded in Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk, Poltava and Sumy regions.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic (October 29), over 4.408 million people have contracted flu and respiratory infections, including 40,723 people over the past 24 hours.

The ministry publishes no separate statistics on cases of A/H1N1 influenza or swine flu.

I commend the Ukrainian Health Ministry for the honest and timely information being given on the swine flu situation. Many other governments and especially the WHO could take much needed valuable lessons from you. Thank you for the information you are providing.
