High Seas Danger

Print version
Feb. 24, 2012, 12:55 a.m. | Ukraine — by Oksana Grytsenko

The Greek cargo ship Ariana arrives in the Port of Salalah in Oman on Jan. 5, 2010 after pirates released its 24 Ukrainian crew members from seven months in captivity. More recently, the Jan. 31 deaths of seven Ukrainians on a Turkish ship have highlighted the dangers faced by the nearly 100,000 Ukrainians who make a living – sometimes illegally – by hauling cargo across oceans and seas on foreign ships.
