You're reading: Hollande: Ukraine may face civil war if no presidential election is held

It is extremely important to hold the presidential elections on May 25 in Ukraine, as otherwise the country may plunge into chaos and civil war, French President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday.

“If there are no elections on May 25, Ukraine will face chaos and civil war,” he said on the TV channel BFM-TV.

“We must do everything possible to avoid a civil war, as when a conflict starts, you never know when it will finish,” Hollande said.

He said that he told the Russian leadership that France attaches great importance to the elections in Ukraine. Hollande said that he discussed this matter with Moscow not directly, but through intermediaries.

The French president said that they shared Germany’s stand on the Ukrainian issue.
