Moscow - The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch welcomes the decision of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to open a humanitarian corridor for civilians wishing to leave the operation zone in southeastern Ukraine.

“We hail this decision. It reduces the “snowball” effect probability,” Human Rights Watch Russia leader Tatiana Lokshina told Interfax on Tuesday, June 10. She came back from a trip to Ukraine in late May.

Human Rights Watch asked the Ukrainian administration a few days ago to do the utmost for lessening humanitarian risks of the military operation, she said.

“Our appeal pointed out that both sides to the conflict had responsibilities. Not only the Ukrainian authorities but also the militia leaders must do everything to reduce the harm and risks for noncombatants. The humanitarian corridor is not an exception. The corridor requires efforts of the Ukrainian forces and the relevant conduct of the militia,” the Human Rights Watch representative said.
