The intensity of attacks by militants on Ukrainian positions has declined after a regime of artillery silence was declared in eastern Ukraine, but the flow of fighters and weapons from Russia continues through the sections of the border not controlled by Ukraine, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has reported.

“According to our intelligence, the flow of fighters, weapons and ammunition from Russia continues through the sections of the border areas that are still controlled by terrorists,” NSDC spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Oct. 22.

He said that in this regard, Ukraine insists on “expanding the OSCE’s presence along the border with the Russian Federation.”

Lysenko also said that the intensity of attacks had decreased after the announcement of the silence regime, however, he said, in some areas of the anti-terrorist operation zone militants continue to violate the ceasefire. Militants were most active near the Donetsk airport and in the towns of Avdiyivka and Debaltseve in Donetsk region.

“In particular, terrorists used artillery to shell the positions of the Ukrainian military not far from Krasnohorivka in Maryinka district, in the village of Pisky, near the villages of Tonenke, Novobakhmutivka in Yasynuvata district, Donetsk region, and near the village of Mykolaivka, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region,” he said.

He said that Ukrainian troops had repelled two attacks on the Donetsk airport.

“Terrorists suffered great losses. Our positions at this facility were shelled four times,” he said.
