The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has opened a criminal case on the road accident involving MP and former Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko, Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

"A criminal case has been opened," he told journalists before an extraordinary government meeting on Nov. 26.

Lutsenko said that he had not personally been in contact with the MP. He only confirmed that Omelchenko had been sober while driving his car at a speed of around 70 kilometers per hour.

He also said that it usually takes one or two months to conduct the tests required for investigators.

As reported, Omelchenko hit a 48-year-old man while driving his Mitsubishi Pajero car late on Nov. 25. The man died at the scene.
