Ukrainian law enforcers have tightened security, Deputy Interior Minister Viktor Ratushniak has said.

He said on the Social Status program on the Tonis TV channel that the transition to tightened security has been planned since June 1, 2012, that is, a week before the start of Euro 2012, but due to the recent developments in Dnipropetrovsk the deadline was moved.

"Police officers are currently doing everything to ensure that people work and holiday safely, and so that public order and the safety of citizens are ensured not only in Dnipropetrovsk, but also throughout the state of Ukraine. Security has been tightened, and the number of patrols on the streets has significantly increased," Ratushniak said.

He said that law enforcement agencies should be fully prepared to maintain law and order during Euro 2012. In April, special police units carried out large-scale exercises, and all of the necessary measures were worked out to train employees. Over 22,000 police officers are to be involved in maintaining public safety during match days in four host cities in Ukraine, and in the days between the matches their number will be more than 11,000.
