A special department to reimburse people for illegally removed assets and losses from the annexation of Crimea by Russia will be created at the Justice Ministry of Ukraine, the press service of the ministry has said.

“A special unit to deal with the return of illegally taken funds and
reimbursement for losses due to the illegal annexation of Crimea by the
Russian Federation will be created in the system of the Justice
Ministry,” the press service said, citing Justice Minister Pavlo
Petrenko.

The ministry noted that the issue was discussed at an operational
meeting of the Prosecutor General’s Office on the subject of identifying
and returning from abroad funds and other assets illegally obtained by
former senior officials.

According to Petrenko, the issue of returning stolen assets and reimbursing for losses are directly linked.

“Thus, we can say that some representatives of the previous
government were not only related to the events that occurred in Crimea,
but also funded the separatist movement in eastern Ukraine,” he said.

The minister also said that the Justice Ministry is currently
developing a bill that would allow to apply correspondence criminal
proceedings against persons being on the international wanted list, as
well as those legal entities that are recognized partners in part of
illegal withdrawal of funds abroad.
