Russia will maintain current stance over Donbas but that may change after May 9, Russian opposition politician and 13th world chess champion Garry Kasparov has said.

“As far as I managed to learn from [Russian President Vladimir] Putin over the last 15 years, he always chooses the hard scenario after some hesitation,” Kasparov said after a presentation of his book “Trading in Fear” in Kyiv on March 27.

According to him, this scenario is due to the perception of Russian security services’ officers of compromise being weak.

“In my opinion, Putin uses the Minsk deals as a smoke screen – now there is a fight to break down the wave of sanctions, so Russian lobbyists abroad use this period to break the economic blockade,” he said.

Kasparov said he doubts Putin will dare to attempt more aggressive actions before May 9 “so as to not to spoil the picture.”

“Probably no difference will be made after May 9,” he added.
