You're reading: Kazakh Prosecutor General warns compatriots fighting in Syria, Ukraine about criminal liability

Astana - The Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office is aware of a number of Kazakhstan's nationals fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and southeastern Ukraine.

“The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan says that it has objective information about a number of Kazakh citizens involved in the hostilities in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria,” the office press service said in a statement posted on Thursday, Oct. 30.

“There is also information about a number of citizens departing [from Kazakhstan] to join the armed conflict in southeastern Ukraine,” it said.

The police and specialized government agencies are holding criminal inquiries into such cases and some suspects have already been convicted, the statement said.

Attempts of Kazakh citizens to go to conflict hotbeds, in particular, with the assistance of recruiters, continue, it noted.

The Kazakh Prosecutor General’s Office warned Kazakh nationals about relevant criminal liabilities.

“Please be officially advised that any information of this kind is thoroughly verified by the police and specialized government agencies. Every person whose prospective or committed crime defined by the aforesaid articles of the criminal code of the republic is proven with objective information will be subject to criminal liability,” the statement said.
