Kharkiv's Freedom Square will be a fan zone during the Euro 2012 European football Championship, Deputy Kharkiv Mayor Oleksandr Kryvtsov has said.

"During the European football championship, this square will be a fan area. We have good experience in holding mass events for hundreds of thousands of people here, and I think that during the Euro 2012 it will be an interesting place to be," he told European journalists and UEFA delegates on Tuesday.

According to the press service of Kharkiv City Council, on Tuesday in Kharkiv a media tour was held through the Euro 2012 facilities for European journalists.

About 50 reporters from the leading European media from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, Poland and other countries participated.

UEFA Euro 2012 Operations Director Martin Kallen, UEFA Manager in Ukraine Bo Sandstrom, and UEFA Euro 2012 director in Ukraine Markiyan Lubkivsky also took part in the event.

Kharkiv Mayor Hennadiy Kernes introduced Kharkiv to the reporters.

"The Euro 2012 is one more chance to show the whole world that Kharkiv is a special city and no person will remain untouched by it. A piece of it will remain in the heart of everyone [who visits the city]," he said.
