Kherson Regional Council has supported the law of Ukraine on the principles of the state language policy and assigned Russian language with the status of a regional language at a meeting on Friday.

According to a Kherson-based Ploscha Svobody online publication, 50 out of the 55 deputies registered in the sitting hall supported the law, four deputies voted against it, and one deputy refrained from voting.

According to the source, Russian language was declared a regional language due to the fact that “24.9% of the regions’ population said that Russian is their native language, according to the results of the population census.”
