You're reading: Klimkin says no link between association deal ratification, implementation debate

Brussels - The ratification of the Ukraine-EU association deal and the debate on its implementation are totally independent processes, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin told reporters after an Eastern Partnership foreign ministerial conference in Brussels.

“These are two independent tracks – the ratification of this
agreement and the consultations on its implementation,” Klimkin said.

“We are holding trilateral consultations with the European Commission
and the Russian side but we are not discussing the logic of this
agreement and its text,” Klimkin said.

The Russian opinion about potential risks posed by the agreement was
presented to Ukraine yesterday, but it concerned practical
implementation issues, such as customs administering, he said.

The minister said they needed to make progress but the issues were absolutely specific.

“We do not see any problems but we see certain issues that have to be
dealt with in the course of the [agreement] implementation. These are
two parallel tracks,” Klimkin said.
