You're reading: Klitschko: Repeat elections should be held throughout Ukraine under new law

Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reforms Party leader Vitali Klitschko has said that repeat elections should be held throughout Ukraine, not just in five single-seat constituencies.

“We think that the elections should be held not only in these five districts. We can talk about new elections throughout the country, but not under this shameful law that gave room for manipulations in single-seat constituencies, because it’s possible to indefinitely challenge the election results in the courts… We need to hold the elections under a new law, under open party lists,” the party’s press service quoted Klitschko as saying.

At a rally held outside the building of the Central Election Commission (CEC) on Tuesday, Klitschko said that the recognition by the CEC of the impossibility of determining the election results in five election districts is a sign of the commission’s actual consent to the fact of manipulations and the falsification of the election results in these districts.

He noted that “in fact there is no constituency where there was no attempt of fraud during the electoral process.”

“Parliamentary elections in Ukraine were unfair. An assessment of these elections was made by international observers, European institutions and Ukrainians. Our task is to make people more active and explain to them that only their position and struggle can change the situation in the country,” Klitschko said.

As reported, the Central Election Commission, in its resolution adopted on November 5, recognized the impossibility of announcing parliament election results in five single-seat constituencies – Nos. 94, 132, 194, 197 and 223. In addition, the commission recognized the need to hold repeat elections in these constituencies and asked the parliament to take a decision on the holding of repeat elections in these constituencies.
