You're reading: Kolesnichenko wants to brief EP on growth of fascism threat in Ukraine

Regions Party parliamentary faction member Vadym Kolesnichenko has said that the bill on the functioning of the Ukrainian language and the rules of using other languages in Ukraine, which were drawn up by the parliamentary opposition, contradict Ukraine's international commitments.

“I have contacted experts that will translate the bill into English in the near future. After that, we will send it to the European parliamentarians for consideration,” the Regions Party’s press service quoted Kolesnichenko on Monday.

“They [the MEPs] should realize that the threat of fascism is not just growing in Ukraine, fascism has proudly reared its head in our country, and the opposition’s bills – filled with xenophobia – confirm this,” Kolesnichenko said.

He said the authors of the document do not know anything about Ukraine’s international obligations.

“They could not at even name the laws they referred to in the document. Form this bill, one can come to a conclusion that only citizens that speak Ukrainian are Ukrainians, while those who don’t speak Ukrainian are foreigners,” the politician said.
